Summary
In the opening chapters of How Could I Possibly Like Him, the narrative establishes a high-tension “strong-versus-strong” dynamic between two opposites whose lives collide during a turbulent high school merger.
Sui Houyu, a strikingly beautiful yet volatile “problem student” who suffers from mania and chronic insomnia, moves to the remote Xiangjia Lane in an attempt to escape his fractured family life.
There, he immediately crosses paths with the shamelessly flirtatious and highly observant Hou Mo.
After a brief but violent skirmish in an alley—during which Hou Mo nonchalantly observes Sui Houyu’s impressive fighting skills—the two are unexpectedly reunited in the so-called “slacker” Class 17 of the newly established Fengyu High School.
When their eccentric homeroom teacher, Ouyang Ge, forces them into leadership roles by appointing the hyper-energetic Sui Houyu as Class Monitor and the academically gifted “hidden god” Hou Mo as Study Representative, the stage is set for a battle of wits and personalities.
This tension is further intensified by the school’s grueling mandatory military training and the gradual realization that Hou Mo might be the only “cure” for Sui Houyu’s restless mind.
